Innovating for a Low-Carbon

The goal of the project is to bring together up to 10,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), non-profit organizations, and small municipalities into a "Sustainable Community" to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from small emitters. Although they generate nearly 70% of Quebec’s emissions, these actors have little to no access to the resources needed to reduce their carbon footprint. As a pioneering and one-of-a-kind initiative, this project is the first to develop a world-class methodology (VM0018), specifically designed to enable these micro-projects to benefit from the carbon credit mechanism.

The “Sustainable Community” project aims to safeguard economic prosperity, foster a positive attitude toward climate change, and transform business models to protect the environment.

Turning Small Actions into Major Climate Impact

This project aggregates & quantifies small GHG reduction efforts to convert them into high-quality carbon credits. It includes energy-efficient buildings, fuel switching, & diverting industrial and commercial waste from landfills through composting or recycling.

The Sustainable Community brings together SMEs & local governments, often excluded from climate action, by providing them access to voluntary carbon markets and green financing. Since its launch, 8.1 million tonnes of GHGs have been reduced. By promoting eco-friendly practices, it bridges the gap between economic profitability & environmental responsibility.

Origins of the project

Founded in 1997, Will Solutions Inc. is a privately owned Canadian company based in Beloeil, Quebec. It enables small organizations, businesses, & municipalities to participate in the voluntary carbon market by converting their GHG reduction efforts into carbon credits. In doing so, the company rewards individuals, companies, & communities advocating for sustainable development.

Its social philosophy is based on giving back: 80% of carbon revenues are allocated to SMEs, NPOs, & initiators of reduction micro-projects. Additionally, 10% of its net profits are donated to local projects that further support sustainable development. Will Solutions is a BCorp certified company.

The evolution of the project

In August 2023, ClimateSeed visited Will Solutions. VCS-certified since 2013, Will Solutions adds new projects and participants to its Sustainable Community each year. ClimateSeed explored innovative waste diversion projects that avoid methane emissions while helping reduce suppliers’ Scope 3 emissions.

First company

Electronic waste

Often, electronic waste ends up in landfills or is burned for energy production, which is not a sustainable solution. A pioneer in its field in North America, the company offers a recycling program to its customers & suppliers, with a zero-landfill policy.

It reuses 96-98% of materials that would otherwise be discarded or burned. With an innovative machine, the company separates and recycles electronic components that others cannot make circular. The materials recycled include cardboard bales, plastic films, styrofoam, various plastics, stainless steel, copper, gold, aluminum, and used toner powder and cartridges. The passion for innovation and climate change makes this company particularly inspiring.

Second company

Food waste

Specializing in the recycling, collection, and upcycling of by-products and production surpluses from medium and large food producers, the company contributes to a green and circular economy.

Founded in 1996, it is now one of Canada's leaders in transforming agri-food by-products into high-quality livestock feed, such as flour, bread, grains, and chocolate. During the visit, seeing a mountain of chips, pretzels, and individually wrapped candy waste might make you rethink indulging in sweets. Over half of Canada's food production is lost or wasted. This project helps companies turn their organic waste into profit and a positive environmental impact.
