Forests play a critical role in meeting greenhouse gas mitigation objectives, with their potential to store large quantities of carbon and ability to act as an ongoing sink removing carbon from the atmosphere.

Forest climate change mitigation activities generally fall into three broad categories: conserving existing forests; increasing forest extent through reforestation, afforestation, and agroforestry; and changing the management of existing forests to increase carbon in forests and forest products.
